The Florida Keys is an incredibly unique fishery. With the everglades within reach and Florida bay at its back door and the reef just offshore there is nowhere that has the variety of Islamorada. Islamorada is known as the sport-fishing capitol of the world and there is a huge amount of angling history that took place right on the flats of downtown Islamorada. The variety of fish to be caught in this area is staggering but what draws me and thousands of other anglers is the silver king. Every year tarpon swim the backcountry and oceanside of Islamorada from April thru June. Tarpon fishing in the clear water around town is incredibly challenging but seeing a tarpon eat your fly in gin-clear water is the pinnacle of fly angling. Whether slipping a fly onto a laid-up fishes nose in the backcountry or throwing infant of a long string of fish on the ocean the excitement is amazing. There is no place I would rather tarpon fish than Islamorada.
